The Betrayal

Title

The Betrayal

Description

In this vertical composition a figure is shown lying doubled over in the foreground. The figure is rendered in white, with a heavy line which is not completely filled in, leaving parts of the black base to show through. The head of the figure is cast under a shadow, making their gender somewhat ambiguous. Behind the figure in the middle ground and to the right, there is a rooster standing on a classical column. To the left in the middle ground, there appears to be a shoreline leading the viewer to the buildings in the distance. Most of the work in this composition is covered in black, however the shoreline and buildings give the work a sense of depth. Behind the buildings, dark peaks give the impression of a mountain range. The print appears to have been made on an order form, part of which is visible on the horizon, behind the mountains. Elements such as the column and buildings in the background appear incomplete. They are not rooted to the ground but rather appear to float in the distance.
