A simple wooden boat with ornamental detail on its sides enters a small lake or pond from the left side of the image. The pond is represented by a series of concentric blue circles. In the foreground are green grasses and reeds. Some of the grasses have small detailed seeds; one includes small flowers in the shapes of stars.
Pak-hing Kan was born in China and studied art in Hong Kong starting at a young age. She received a B.Ed. degree from Taiwan Normal University, Taiwan (1968-1971), a B.F.A. degree from College of St. Catherine (1975-1977) and did graduate study in ceramics at the University of Minnesota (1980-1982). She also studied drawing and painting privately with Julio Alpuy and at the Art Students’ League, NY.
Kan was a textile print designer and artist before she devoted herself fulltime to ceramic art in 1995. She is known for her intimate, small-scale, delicate ceramic boxes that are exquisitely painted on all surfaces. Her work has been exhibited in the United States and Asia in public museums and private collections. She is the recipient of many awards including Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant 2006, Creative Capital grant 2006, and Manhattan Community Arts Fund Grant 2006. She also earned a residence in Fuping (www.FLICAM.com), China 2007 and in Jingdezhen, China 2008.
