Rouen Cathedral Constructed 1400 - 1500

The facade of an ornate Gothic cathedral with its bell towers and spires looms large in this vertical monochromatic composition. Many of the traditional elements of Gothic church architecture can be seen on the building including a rose window, and arched windows and portals. The towers that flank the cathedral are asymmetric with the one on the right being much taller than the one on the left. Several small figures roam the street in the foreground in front of the church. On the left, a figure sells items from a wheelbarrow as a procession of very small figures can be seen either coming or going from the left entrance of the church behind them. On the right, a horse pulls a cart with a figure behind it. A cloaked figure walks away from the other figures in the lower right corner of the work, which is in shadow.
