Innocence in Venice

Title

Innocence in Venice

Description

The foreground of this composition is filled with a variety of people focused on a woman slightly left of center surrounded by pigeons on the ground and in the air around her. A photographer in the right foreground, under the cover of a draped cloth over his head, is gesturing to a man squatting down between the photographer and the woman being photographed. He is holding up an accordion folded paper in front of the woman. Around the photographer is a vast variety of onlookers. There is a woman dressed in a long flowing white garment with a white shawl over her head standing to the photographer's left. Directly behind the photographer is a gentleman wearing a hat and sporting a bushy moustache and goatee. Pigeons are perched on his arm and shoulder. A partially obstructed tall bald-headed man in a monk's habit can be seen in the crowd, as well as a full figured nun directly to the photographer's right side. A few more male figures can be seen to the right of the nun. All figures seem to be focused primarily on the woman dressed with a plush collared coat opened to expose her ruffled dress, dark shoes, hat and purse. Just behind the woman in the near distance is another male figure wearing religious habit. Just beyond this figure are two striped vertical posts at the water's edge. A gondola with a gondolier can be seen in a body of water in the middle ground. In the background on the left is a steepled tower; just to the right of this tower is a column with a winged lion or griffin and on the far right is a column topped with a figure holding a spear. These landmark columns let us know that this scene is taking place in Venice.
