The 2000s and Onward
Rumors of Bettye’s retirement had started as early as the 80s, but she proved to be one of the rare artists to continue a strong career into her late life. Bettye has continued to focus on the subject of water, and has also begun to experiment more with the subject of trees. In addition to her continued experimentation with color and abstraction, Bettye began to incorporate monotype printmaking into her work. While trying new things in the studio, Bettye kept up one of her favorite activities: travel. In the new millennium she would frequently travel to Greece, Italy, and Norway; always keeping a sketchbook by her side. Now well into her 90s, Bettye shows no signs of stopping even as she nears the end of her long and storied career.
