1958 Founding Documents
The Catholic Interracial Council of the Twin Cities (CICTC) was founded in 1958. The organization’s objectives were to make more widely known and to actively live out the Catholic principles of charity and justice as they relate to racial issues in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Based on these 1958 documents, the founding members were influenced by:
- the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ statement Discrimination and Christian Conscience, with William O. Brady, Archbishop of St. Paul, being one of the signers;
- Father Francis Gilligan, the first chairman of the Minnesota Interracial Commission;
- the Friendship House movement; and
- Morris Milgram, Philadelphia homebuilder and leader in the open housing movement.
