From the Great War to women's suffrage, the Great Depression, World War II, surburban life of the 1950s, and the civil rights movement of the 1960s, the 20th century was a time of great change for humanity and Clara Gardner Mairs lived through each of these historic events. However, instead of focusing on the changes society was going through, Mairs chose to focus her art on the day to day life of every day people. Her art glosses over world events and instead focuses upon the simple events of daily life, from weddings to funerals, Sunday choir to women gossiping. Through this, she takes history and humanizes it, showing that even throughout great societal change, many aspects of human life will always stay the same.
