Title
Amiens Cathedral
Description
A richly ornamented cathedral facade is depicted in this vertical monochromatic composition. The church has two tall square bell towers on either side of a rose window. Beneath this, a row of statues spans the width of the cathedral with a row of lancet arches below it. The church’s three arched portals are decorated with a lavish quantity of sculpture, each arch topped with a finial. In the foreground, several figures mill around the street in front of the church. One figure is seated in a horse-drawn carriage, which he drives away from the building, toward the right corner of the composition. In the lower left corner of the work, a dog stands in the street facing the viewer. Smaller buildings can be seen in the background on either side of the cathedral.
