Background on Ariston

Since 1906, the Ariston student arts and literary journal at St. Catherine University has featured a remarkable range of artistic talent from our campus community. Although the earliest issues only included students’ written work, beginning in 1940, Ariston also began to incorporate a growing variety of visual art under the guidance of its first faculty art advisor, Sister Philomene (whose own work is featured elsewhere on St. Kate's Omeka).

Ariston: 1956-1979

This exhibit aims to illuminate an especially productive era for student visual art and design in Ariston, beginning in 1956 with the arrival of the publication’s first student arts editor, Anne Stahmer, and continuing through 1979, when the publication fell back to a less frequent annual issue schedule.

We focus specifically on Ariston journal covers, which reflect the artistic vigor of this era and offer a point of entry for further exploration. We invite you to consider these materials from several perspectives:

  • All Covers: An overview of all covers from 1956-1979 in chronological order—start here to get a sense for the progression of visual styles
  • Print in the Mid-Century: Explore covers in context with the emergence of new techniques in print throughout the mid-century period
  • Artists Behind Ariston: Learn more about noteworthy contributors to Ariston art and design during this era, including both students and faculty advisors
